Methyl Chloride CAS#74-87-3

Methyl Chloride CAS#74-87-3
Iupac Name:chloromethane
CAS No.: 74-87-3
Molecular Weight:50.485
Introduction:
Methyl chloride (CH3Cl) is a halogenated organic compound and a simple alkyl halide. At room temperature, it exists as a colorless, volatile gas with a faint, sweet, chloroform-like odor.
Methyl chloride was first synthesized in 1835 by French chemists Jean-Baptiste Dumas and Eugène-Melchior Péligot via the reaction of methanol with hydrochloric acid in the presence of zinc chloride catalyst. It was later independently prepared by Robert Bunsen in 1844 through the chlorination of methane. Historically significant as one of the earliest alkyl halides characterized, methyl chloride serves primarily as a methylating agent in chemical synthesis, a refrigerant (though largely phased out), a solvent for resins and oils, and an intermediate in silicone polymer and quaternary ammonium compound production. Industrially, it is manufactured on a large scale by the catalytic chlorination

Use and Manufacturing

1 Definition

ChEBI: A one-carbon compound that is methane in which one of the hydrogens is replaced by a chloro group.

3.2 General Description

A colorless gas with a faint sweet odor. Shipped as a liquid under its vapor pressure. A leak may either be liquid or vapor. Contact with the liquid may cause frostbite by evaporative cooling. Easily ignited. Vapors heavier than air. Can asphyxiate by the displacement of air. Under prolonged exposure to fire or intense heat the containers may rupture violently and rocket. Used to make other chemicals and as a herbicide.
