DefinitionChEBI: A lactam obtained by formal cyclocondensation of creatine. It is a metabolite of creatine.

Methods of Manufacturing900g creatine hydrate, 550ml concentrated hydrochloric acid and 150ml water were heated for 24h.?Hot filtration, the filtrate was cooled to 0-5°C in an ice bath, and 1 L of 28% ammonia water was added.?Stir under cooling to reduce the temperature to 0°C, filter out the creatinine crystals, wash with ammonia until it does not contain chloride ions, then wash with cold methanol, and dry to obtain about 550g of creatinine.

Purification MethodsLikely impurities are creatine and ammonium chloride. Dissolve it in dilute HCl, then neutralise with ammonia. Recrystallise it from H2O by adding excess of Me2CO.
